About MIKE DUNN - System Operator
I retired in 2018 after working in the forest industry for 42 years. Starting in the engineering department as a “Axe Man” and progressed up through ranks and retired as a Operational Forest Planner at Western Forest Products.
I recently became a certified “Small Water System” operator in 2023 as our previous operator Bill Taylor retired and moved away to Prince Rupert. In CDWUS my main duties are water sampling, water use monitoring and keeping the Directors informed of any problems that I observe in the system.
Maintaining certification as a SWS operator requires continual training. Recently I have been participating in zoom training sessions put on by the BC Small Water Systems community network. These courses are designed to keep operators current with changes in the new “Water Protection Act” and other topic’s such as water quality, disinfection and water conservation to name a few.
When studying for becoming a certified water operator I discovered that our water system had never been classified as it is an requirement for the Water Protection Act. So after filling out all of the forms our water system is now classified and registered as a “small water system”.
So a little about our water system….
Back in 1970 the water system was designed for 40 residential lots. The majority of these homes were planned to be single family units. Currently we have 38 users on the system with a real mixture of single and multi-family type dwellings.
The majority of the maintenance on the system is done with volunteers. On occasions we will get trades people to look after some of the more technical type work.
Our water is not treated and the last time we had a “boil water advisory” was back in December 2013. Monthly water samples are taken in 5 different locations throughout the system and a detailed mineral analysis is conducted every 3 -5 years. A copy of the detailed water analysis for both wells are posted on the “Water Quality” section of the website for your perusal.
Lately we have been having drought conditions locally and around the rest of the province. This has prompted us to change our water restrictions by shortening the hours and number of the days that we had in previous years.
We ask that you do adhere to these new water restrictions and understand that we all are sharing this valuable water source together.
